Many Native cultures see the Moon as the lifeblood of Earth, referring to her as "Grandmother Moon". She is revered as ruling the vast sources of waters and their tides. She is all about feminine energy, wisdom and intuition, birth, death, reincarnation, and spiritual connection.
Those of us on Earth, watch her monthly dance as she moves gracefully through her orbit, never appearing the same as the night before. There are generally eight phases to the Lunar Cycle. Each one embodies an ideal opportunity to join the Moon's dance and tap into her inate energy. Remember, when you resist water, you only end up frustrated and exhausted; but when you join in her life force, and get carried away by the current, you can literally move mountains.
“Nothing is softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist it.” - Lao Tzu, Philosopher & Founder of Taoism
The New Moon initiates the Moon Cycle. She is positioned between the Sun and the Earth, making her invisible to the naked eye. This phase is often referred to as the 'Seed Moon' because it is the ideal time to focus on the hopes and aspirations you wish to plant in your life. This is the monthly cosmic clean slate and a wonderful cycle to focus on your intentions and the ‘wants’ you long to invite into your life. Make sure, however, to wait until she has moved into her waxing phase before implementing any rituals.
Unplug and spend time alone.
Focus on calming activities to feel more balanced and centered in your life.
Practice Deep Breathing Techniques.
Visualize filling up with the Moon’s feminine energy to recharge your life. Mentally toss away unwanted thoughts and things that no longer serve you.
Meditate to gain new inspirations and aspirations.
Brainstorm new projects to introduce into your life. Gather your thoughts and plan ahead.
The Waxing Crescent Moon appears like the bow of an archer in the sky. This phase generally occurs three – seven days after the New Moon. As the Moon's light grows, so does the energy to manifest, build and implement. The reboot you received with the New Moon now urges you to water the seeds you have just planted. To do that, you must first get clear on what you want, and why you want it.
Identify the areas in your life that require redirection or enhanced positivity.
Examine and explore your dreams.
Brainstorm and spell out your goals.
Develop and set your intentions.
If during the New Moon you received a new vision or inspiration, now is the time to take a deeper dive to gain clarification and lay the mental groundwork. Answer the question of why you're doing what you are doing. What is the action plan that will get you to where you wish to be?
Visualize abundance, and as if your intentions have already been actualized.
Create an affirmation statement.
The First Quarter Moon looks like the Moon is half full (not half empty 🙃), approximately seven to ten days after the New Moon. You’ve set your intentions and laid the groundwork so now be prepared to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Generally, this is when any obstacles or unrecognized challenges present themselves. So, this is the time to commit! You will be in positions forcing you to make decisions and take action. It means more energy on your part – physically, mentally, emotionally and perhaps even spiritually.
Stay calm and keep your spirits up.
Remain flexible. Revisit your intentions often to remind yourself what you’re working so hard for; and why.
Make decisions based on the outcome you’re trying to achieve.
Give yourself additional time if you need it.
Step back and reflect. This is not your first rodeo. You’ve been through worse. Can any of the lessons in your past apply? Can the information and wisdom you’ve already learned benefit you at this time?
Push through the resistance and stay the course.
Waxing Gibbous ‘Bulging’ Moon begins where the First Quarter Moon leaves off up until the Full Moon. It’s been called ‘bulging’ because this is the phase swollen with promise and potential.
Stay on track and make necessary tweaks along the way.
Examine your habits and routines. Are they still serving your greater good? Or have you slipped here and there?
Review your intentions. Are your actions in alignment to what you are trying to manifest? Revise, refine, and reevaluate as needed.
Continue to observe and fill in the tiny details you may have missed when creating your plan or setting your intentions.
Assess the goals and decide on what’s working or what needs to change. You may even need to start over in certain areas.
The Full Moon is exactly that, filled with the Sun's reflected light, appearing as a glowing orb in the night sky. She has reached her pinnacle, and everything feels more expansive – you may feel more emotional, sensual, or passionate. This is the time to harvest the seeds you’ve planted.
Wonderful for self-reflection and introspection and the best time to create spiritual or soul-centered goals.
Review your New Moon goals and take stock of what you’ve accomplished over the last couple of weeks. Then see them through a lens of gratitude for the very fullness that is your life. Count your blessings and put your thanks in writing.
Devise a plan of next action steps including elements you wish to release.
Set Full Moon intentions.
Intuition is heightened at this time. As the Full Moon illuminates the dark of night, so too can she shed light upon the shadow sides of yourself. Maybe even some things you didn’t want to see. You may find old emotions or stagnant energy rise up to the surface (just like the tides), so remember to be gentle with yourself.

visualize any and all negativity
flowing down the drain.
The Disseminating Moon is when you see the Full Moon begin to lose her light. As the luminescence dwindles, so does our energy. This is not the time to start new projects or lofty endeavours. This is a time to go within, to contemplate, to reassess.
Reflect on your goals.
Regroup and accept that which is beyond your control.
The Last Quarter Moon is when you see the other half of the Moon. Her light, like our energy continues to fade and release. This is one of the best times of the month to focus on silence and inner reflection. It is ideal for introspection, reevaluation and the surrender of that which we can’t control.
Although this tends to be a time for rest and recouperation, consider activities that may require more energy such as exercise to help you purge and release any negativity in your life. It is also a great time to clean and purge your home and get yourself organized.
Identify what no longer serves you, and what you would like to let go of – things, people, negative emotions, situations. Put a plan in place to either eliminate or set firm boundaries moving forward.
Excellent time to identify and change negative or unhealthy patterns – the wrong foods, relationships, habits, indulgences etc.
Do a cleanse.
Forgive (yourself and others).
The Balsamic Moon comes from the word ‘balsam’, the aromatic resin often used as a 'balm' to heal or soothe. Also called the 'Waning Crescent Moon', you see only a sliver of Moonlight in the sky. This is the most spiritual time of the Lunar Cycle. Here we reflect on and accept, the lessons we’ve learned as we lay the groundwork for the next cycle.
Meditate on the lessons taught
Wonderful time to do inner child work
